Dayton MB1025-8 10″ Pro Midbass Driver Thiele/Small

Dayton MB1025-8

The Dayton MB1025 is a high power midbass for pro use. It is a heavy woofer for a 10″. The magnet is massive, weighing 65oz. The Rated Power Handling is 350W RMS. Sensitivity (SPL) is a healthy 95dB (2.83V/1m).

With a Xmax of only 3mm, this woofer is optimized for vocal reinforcement, meaning it should not be used below 80Hz. For use in a live band, a subwoofer or bass bin is necessary.

Initial Thiele & Small Parameters (DATS)Fig 1 – Bad DATS measurement

My initial DATS measurements were horrific (Fig 1). After many attempts, I was not able to get a proper measurement. I duly packed up the MB1025 for a return back to Parts Express.

The next day, I tried it again and still the problem persisted. In fact, this time it was worse. Out of desperation, I pressed on the cone a few times, hoping that whatever that was preventing the cone from moving freely would be dislodged. True enough, that solved the issue.

Proper DATSĀ  Thiele/Small ParametersFig 2 – Good DATS measurement of MB1025

Fig 2 is what a proper measurement should look like. Overall, it is close to Dayton’s specs. My Fs is 49Hz compared to Dayton’s 45Hz. The Qts is at 0.40 whereas Dayton’s is at 0.34. Once my woofer is broken in, I expect my DATS measurements to be like Dayton’s.

Ported Box=35 liters | F3=51Hz | Q=0.61Fig 3 – Box Simulation for Bass Reflex

Fig 3 is a simulation of the MB1025 in a Bass Reflex. The optimal size is about 45 liters (Red plot). This is rather big for a 10″. I prefer something smaller. A 35 liters internal volume tuned to 50Hz is more appealing (Black plot).

This Bass Reflex is good for a general purpose use. There’s decent bass down to 50Hz, suitable for playing background music during events. When one is using the mic, a low cut filter in the mixer can be activated.

Sealed Box=35 liters | F3=86Hz | Q=0.61Fig 4 – Box Simulation for 35L Sealed Box

If you plan to use the MB1025 strictly for voices, a Sealed Box is a better option. The F3 is 86Hz, just right for mic use. System Q is 0.61. At this number, the upper bass is well damped.

Sealed Box=25 liters | F3=84Hz | Q=0.67Fig 5 – Box Simulation for 25L Sealed Box

For those that demand a compact box, the MB1025 can be loaded into a 25 liters Sealed Box. If there’s not enough space for the horn, it can be placed on top of the box or a separate enclosure can built strictly for the horn and compression driver.
