Since I’m working on coaxials, I found one in my inventory that has been sitting around for years. This JVC CS-HX512 is a 5-1/4″ Dual Cone woofer that is meant for cars. Dual Cone because she doesn’t have a tweeter but a whizzer cone for the treble. Such a design is not that popular nowadays but in the early years, woofers sporting whizzer cones were very common. Fig 1 – JVC CS-HX512 Thiele/Small Parameters (DATS) Fig 1 is the T/S of the HX512 from DATS. Qts came in at 0.813. That’s quite expected from a woofer that’s meant to be mounted on car doors. What I didn’t expect is a Sensitivity of 91dB (at 2.83V). This would come in handy for chip amps. Sealed Box=13 liters | F3=81Hz | Q=0.99Fig 2 – Sealed Box Normally, car woofers are designed for sealed boxes. Fig 2 is a simulation of the HX512 in a 13 liters sealed box. Q is rather high at 0.987. F3 is 80.8Hz (-3dB). Ported Box=27 liters | Fb=50Hz | Q=0.895Fig 3 – Ported Box Fig 3 is the HX512 in a Bass Reflex. Though this is not for car use, a 27 liters mini tower can be built for home use. |
