HiVi F5 – 5″ Midwoofer Review

HiVi F5 Review

HiVi F5 Frequency Response (manufacturer)

The Frequency Response plot above is by HiVi. When I saw this plot, I was very hesitant to buy this woofer because of the sharp peak at 1.5kHz. With a peak like that, I will definitely have to eq it off. That will lead to higher cost in the crossover.

Fig 1 – F5 RAW Frq Response • Baffle Width = 8-1/2″

Fortunately the peak is absent when I measured the F5 (Fig 1). There is a light emphasis in the upper mids (1kHz~2kHz) and at the cone breakup (6kHz~10kHz).

At the other end, the bass is about 8dB less taking 1.5kHz as the reference. That’s quite a huge difference. But then again, it’s not uncommon for a 5″ woofer to be lacking in bass.

This F5 will work well as a midrange in a sealed box. For a 2-way bass reflex, the crossover will be more complex.

Fig 2 – F5 Toneburst Energy Storage

The Toneburst plot in Fig 2 shows unwanted energy (light blue slices) from 5kHz~15kHz. That’s from the cone breakup.

Fig 3 – F5 Spectrogram

The Spectrogram in Fig 3 shows the cone breakup does not last more than 1msec. However, in the upper mids from 1kHz~2kHz, there are some “ringing” but they are dissipated by 5msec.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4 pi) with the mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
