Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 10″ Pro Woofer Review

Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 Review

Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 Frequency Response (manufacturer)

The plot above is from the Peerless datasheet. According to their specs, this woofer extends to 3,500Hz. It seems the infection point is about 2kHz.

Fig 1 – FSL-1020R02-08 Frq Response • Baffle Width = 14″

Fig 1 is with the Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 loaded onto a Sealed box of 27 liters that I used in the Osprey-II. She does extend to 3,500Hz which is a healthy bandwidth. This 10″ woofer will have no issues crossing at 2kHz.

Fig 2 – FSL-1020R02-08 Waterfall

Fig 2 is the Waterfall plot of the FSL-1020R02-08.  Artifacts close to 5kHz are the most distinct. This is from the peak seen in Fig 1 at the same frequency.

Fig 3 – FSL-1020R02-08 Toneburst Energy Storage

The Toneburst plot in Fig 3 shows few unwanted energy (light blue slices) from 1kHz~10kHz. The artifacts at 5kHz in the Waterfall plot are those unwanted energy from 4kHz ~ 6kHz.

Fig 4 – FSL-1020R02-08 Spectrogram

The Spectrogram in Fig 4 is a 2D version of the Waterfall and Toneburst plots. The artifacts at 5kHz are clearly visible. Though they are recorded, they will not affect the sound quality as they are dissipated by 2msec.

Fig 5 – FSL-1020R02-08 Step

The Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 has the best Step response in my 10″ woofer collection. The trailing edge is gradual, without any peaks.

Fig 6 – FSL-1020R02-08 Distortion

The Harmonic Distortion (H2-H9) is 1.98% (Fig 6). 2nd Harmonic is a low of 0.272% while the 3rd is at 0.425%.

Summary

I actually worked on a 2-way with this Peerless FSL-1020R02-08 back in 2021. In that design (Condor), I paired her with the JBL 2414H-C compression driver mated to a Dayton 6512 horn. The performance was incredible.

The only 10″ I have that comes close is the FaitalPro 10FE200-4 that is in the Condor-II and Condor-III. These three Condors are up there with the best.

It’ll be interesting to see how well the Dayton MB1025-8 and the GRS 10PT-8 compete with these two woofers.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4 pi) with the mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
