SB12PFCR25-4 Coaxial Review

SB12PFCR25-4 Frequency Response

After my disappointment with the 6″ SB Acoustics SB16PFCR25-4 Coaxial, I was hoping their smaller 4″ sibling would fare better. Unfortunately, that is not to be.

Fig 1 shows the relative frequency responses of the woofer and tweeter. In some ways, she is even worse. The tweeter’s sensitivity is still not as high as indicated in SB Acoustics datasheet (Fig 2). But that’s not all. There is a dip in the woofer and tweeter at 2kHz (Fig 1). I’m looking at a 10dB dip. There is simply no way to avoid that dip when I cross the tweeter at 2.5kHz~3kHz.

Fig 2 is the SB12PFCR25-4 published frequency response. The tweeter has no dip at 2kHz. It also shows the tweeter has limited bandwidth. She actually dies off at 7kHz.

Summary

These two coaxials (SB12PFCR25-4 and the SB16PFCR25-4) cost about $65 each. For that kind of money, I can design a two way with a woofer and a tweeter that have a much better response.

Avoid these coaxials. They are not worth the price. Better spend your money on a pair of MTX Terminator 5. I paid $40 for two. That works out to $20 each. Same performance.
