Peerless 830869 with HiVi C3N-III

This Peerless 830869 is another 8″ woofer that I purchased back in 2013. It was about the same time as the HiVi M8a.

As with the M8a, I was never truly satisfied with using the 830869 in a 2-way. I could get the crossover to work but the bass troubled me. After a few attempts, I set her aside and focused on working with smaller woofers.

It would be interesting to see how this 830869 perform as a bass speaker. Believe it or not, this is the first time I’m doing this. For convenience, I use the same 35 liters bass reflex box tune to 41Hz (below). My System Q is at 0.659 which is fine by me. F3 is at 41Hz. Of all the 8″ woofers I tested, this F3 is the lowest. My concern with this Peerless is her attack and whether her upper bass is good enough.

the Inductor

Since the Peerless 830869 is 8Ω, there’s no necessity to change the 10mH inductor. I’m quite confident that she’ll integrate seamlessly with the HiVi C3N-III.

Peerless 830869 Bass

I was shocked when I heard this 830869. She sounded perfect. The bass that was missing in my previous 2-way designs with this 830869 vanished. More proof that 8″ woofers should not be used in 2-ways.

The upper bass in Donna Summer’s She Works Hard For The Money is there. Punchy and clear, though not as aggressive as the HiVi C8. Her attack is very slightly slower but you won’t be able to tell the difference unless in an AB test.

In Stop, Look and Listen, the texture in the bass came out clearly. The upper bass is audible without drowning the vocals.

Lastly, in Hotel California (Eagles – Hell Freezes Over), the 40Hz doesn’t sound truncated. None of the other 8″ woofers that I tested before sounds THIS natural except this Peerless.

Summary

It’s a shame this Peerless 830869 is no longer available. I think in part, it has to do with Covid-19. Many drivers that were easily available before the pandemic simply disappeared after that.

I hope the manufacturer Tymphany will reconsider manufacturing this driver. She is an outstanding bass driver.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4pi). Mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
