Usher 8137A with HiVi C3N-III

This 7″ Usher 8137A is another woofer that I bought way back in 2013. I tried her out in a 3-way with a Scanspeak 3″ dome and a Peerless tweeter. While the sound is alright, I found the bass was not what I was looking for. This is largely due to crossing the Usher at 800Hz to the 3″ dome. Since I am testing for bass, this is the best time to test out this Usher 8137A. Frankly, I’ve never heard her strictly doing bass.

I loaded the 8137A onto a 27 liters bass reflex tuned to 34Hz (below). My System Q is at 0.704. F3 (-3dB) registered 47Hz.

the Inductor

As before, a 10mH iron core inductor is used for the low-pass filter. That’s the only component used in this setup. The HiVi C3N-III is in a 1.5 liters sealed box without any high pass filter.

Usher 8137A Bass

The Usher 8137A sounds similar to the Peerless 830869. Her upper bass is slightly stronger, giving the impression of being punchier. Her attack is the same as the HiVi and the Peerless. Nowhere close to the Seas U22REX.

Summary

There is nothing wrong with this Usher 8137A. When used strictly for bass, she is fine. Actually, she is slightly more articulate than the Peerless 830869 but you wouldn’t know the difference even in an AB test. Both have their own strengths. If you want a deeper bass, go for the Peerless. If you prefer a punchier upper bass, the Usher is the one.

It appears this Usher is no longer available. That’s too bad. She is one of the prettiest woofers around.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4pi). Mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
