Morel CAW634 with HiVi C3N-III

I am a fan of Morel tweeters so buying their CAW634 came with high expectations. In fact, this is the first Morel woofer I ever bought. That was sometime in early 2021.

When I tested her out in 2-way designs, I was extremely disappointed. Her bass was no where close to the Seas U18RNX. I was so angry that I cast her aside, never to be seen again.

Now that I have finished testing out my collection of 8″ woofers, it’s a good time to hear how this 6″ Morel CAW634 performs strictly as a bass woofer.

For this test, I loaded her in a 13 liters bass reflex tuned to 42Hz (above). My System Q is at 0.60 which is more to my liking. The -3dB (F3) is at 43Hz. So far, it looks good on paper. Whether she will give me what I want is left to be seen.

the Inductor

Even though this Morel is 4Ω, I decided to retain the 10mH iron core inductor that I used in my other 8Ω woofers. If it doesn’t sound right, I’ll revert back to a 5.6mH.

Morel CAW634 Bass

WOW…  This is exactly what I’m looking for. Everything is there. She is fast, articulate, punchy and goes down to 40Hz. None of the 8″ woofers that I tested, the HiVi and the Peerless, comes close. The difference is shocking.

Summary

This Morel CAW634 is truly an eye opener. When I first tested her out in a conventional 2-way, that is with a tweeter, she was horrible. However, when used strictly for bass, she shines like a Supernova. Incredible.

I am so glad I found another woofer that can do the kind of bass that I want. She is as good as the Seas U18RNX or maybe even beating her by a nose.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4pi). Mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
