AmpsLab THOR12400 12″ Pro Woofer Review

AmpsLab THOR12400 Review

The THOR12400 is a 12″ high powered pro woofer by AmpsLab. Her Power Handling is 400W RMS, 800W AES and 1,600W Max. Rated Impedance is at 8Ω and Sensitivity at 96dB.

Fig 1 – THOR12400 RAW Frq Response • Baffle Width = 16.25″

Fig 1 is the RAW Frequency Response of the THOR12400 loaded onto a 53 liters Bass Reflex box with a baffle width of 16.25″. Her Frequency extends to 2kHz after which she starts to breakup.

Fig 2 – THOR12400 Waterfall

Fig 2 is the Waterfall plot of the THOR12400. The breakup at 3kHz is clearly seen in the Waterfall.

Fig 3 – THOR12400 Toneburst Energy Storage

The Toneburst plot in Fig 3 shows few unwanted energy (light blue slices) starting at 3kHz. For best performance, she should be used up to 2kHz.

Fig 4 – THOR12400 Spectrogram

The artifacts at 3kHz and beyond are clearly seen in the Spectrogram (Fig 4). When used with a Low Pass filter, these artifacts will be sufficiently reduced.

Fig 5 – THOR12400 Step

The THOR12400 has a fairly fast attack. Her apex in the Step response (Fig 5) is at 88 micro-sec. For a 12″ woofer, that’s impressive.

Fig 6 – THOR12400 Harmonic Distortion

The Harmonic Distortion of the THOR12400 is equally impressive. 2nd hormonic is at -59.6 dBr while her 3rd is at -65.6 dBr.

Summary

I auditioned the THOR12400 without any crossover and she passed with flying colors. From here on, I will design 2-way speakers based on her.

The THOR will be my first loudspeaker kit that I’m offering. It will include a  THOR12400 woofer, a compression driver, a horn and a fully assembled crossover on a pcb.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made in Full Space (4 pi) with the mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
