Peerless 830883 Nomex 6-1/2″ Woofer Review

Manufacturer’s Frequency Response

Fig 1 – Peerless 830883 RAW Frequency Response • 15L Ported Box • Baffle Width = 8-3/4″

Fig 1 is the RAW response of the Peerless 830883 loaded onto a 15 liters ported box tuned to 45Hz. Tuning is by a 2″ diameter PVC tube with a length of 6-1/4″.

We can see a bit of baffle step rising at 1kHz followed by some “ringing”. At about 3kHz, the cone breakup starts, culminating with a burst at around 5kHz. At 6.5kHz, the woofer dies off quite drastically..

Fig 2 – Peerless 830883 Harmonic Distortion

The Harmonic Distortion (Fig 2) is actually quite impressive. Second is -57.7dB below the fundamental while the 3rd is -60.6dB.

Fig 3 – Peerless 830883 Waterfall

The Waterfall plot (Fig 3) recorded strong artifacts from 3kHz onwards. This is expected from the cone breakup.

Fig 4 – Peerless 830883 Spectrogram

The Spectrogram (Fig 4) shows artifacts above 2kHz are inaudible as they are fully dissipated by 2 msec.

Fig 5 – Peerless 830883 Step

The Step response (Fig 5) is pretty good. The apex is at about 50 microsec which is fairly fast. The decay is a mirror image of the attack but at 150 microsec, she undergoes a secondary peak and then decays fully. This is a much better Step than the Dayton GF180-4 shown below (Fig 6).

Fig 7 – Peerless 830883 Excess Phase

There are no anomalies in the Excess Phase (Fig 7). Two glitches are recorded, one at about 390Hz and the other at 1.2kHz. Nothing to worry about.

Summary

In her RAW state, that is without any crossover, the tonal balance of the 830883 is completely off. Actually, she’s quite unlistenable. Her bass is not loud enough, the treble is excessive and the midrange is nothing to crow about.

Because of these characteristics, I’m having difficulty how best to use her. There are no outstanding features that I can focus on. I may have to design her in a sealed box which means she’ll need a subwoofer or a 8″ or 10″  woofer for bass in a 3-way stand alone.

Unless otherwise stated, all measurements were made with the mic at 36 ins, tweeter axis. Impulse Window=5ms. No smoothing applied.
